The purpose of my experiment was to find out whether priming unduly affects people's decision making. It is important to society because the results of my experiment may prove that people can be easily primed to make a certain decision. If they know that this is a component in their everyday life whent hey look at ads or go shopping they may be more aware of it which might help them be less influenced. My hypothesis was; If I show people a picture relating to a certain word then they will fill in the blank with a letter, causing the word to relate to the picture because they have been primed to think of that word. My hypothesis was, overall not supported. I found that it supported with children, but not with adults. Presumably because they have a lot more going on in their lives and have more on their mind. By looking at the results, I found that priming is not extremely effective but does have an impact. I found that for the constant, results were random, for group one, out of three correct answers the average was 1.3 correct answers. For group two, out of three correct answers the average was 1.8 correct answers. The average for those two groups was 1.55 answers correct, which helps me to see that priming does have some affect, as the groups got over half of the words correct. This means that it is indeed possible for someone to be primed to make a decision they would not normally make. Although the data was in favor of my hypothesis. It is mostly inconclusive. If i wanted to get a more accurate result I would have to do more testing. If we want to find a solution to this in the real world, all people need to know is how to identify when they are being primed, which can change the primings influence on them. Future tests may be done on a larger scale, and tests on what primes people and what doesn't, which would help us come up with a meaningful solution which is guarenteed to work. When conducting my experiment I saw that those who were not primed took much longer to answer even though I instructed them to write the first answer that came to their head and those who had been primed responded much more quickly. Not everyone was in the same location, or only looking at the test. In all cases there was outside noise and decorations in the room. The conditions the participant was in may have affected them, reducing the effect of priming. If I were to continue my project, I would get more participants and separate the children and adults results into two separate categories so I could see whether children are more susceptible to priming because from the research I already have tht is true.
